He began his education at UC Berkeley, receiving a degree in music. After a short but successful music career he completed a post-baccalaureate program at Mills College and went on to receive a full scholarship at the prestigious University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He studied ophthalmology for three years at UC Davis, where his ophthalmic knowledge was recognized as being in the top 1% of all ophthalmology residents.
Distinguishing himself further, Dr. Hellman pursued specialized fellowship training in oculoplastic surgery at the esteemed Beaumont Eye Institute.
