CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing

Loss of skin elasticity with age leads to the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Some of these lines are best treated via surgery or Botox injections, and others are better treated with the use of a fractional CO2 laser. Dr. Hellman will discuss which treatment is right for you during your consultation.

The CO2 laser penetrates to the skin level called the dermis, where it stimulates the growth of new collagen. The new collagen gives more support to the skin, creating a firmer, more youthful appearance, and minimizing fine lines. The most common locations for CO2 laser skin resurfacing are the lower lid and perioral (area around the mouth) areas, but some patients will benefit from treatment of the entire face. CO2 laser skin resurfacing is frequently combined with other cosmetic procedures.

With CO2 laser there are no lifting or bending restrictions as is typical with a surgical procedure. The patient can expect recovery to be like getting a bad sunburn. There will be an initial period of peeling. During this stage, keeping the skin moist with Aquaphor ointment is important. This is followed by a few weeks of redness that can be minimized with makeup (green concealer is very effective). Avoiding sun exposure to the laser treated area enhances the longevity of the results.
