Ectropion and Entropion Repair

Ectropion Repair

Ectropion is the term for an eyelid that rotates outward. This can cause irritation, tearing, and a foreign body sensation in the eye. Ectropion can be caused by skin cancers, trauma, facial paralysis, surgery, or inflammation, but it is most commonly caused by age and gravity. Ectropion repair is often as simple as a horizontal tightening of the lower lid. Less commonly, a more complex surgery which uses a full thickness skin graft is required.

Entropion Repair

Entropion occurs when an eyelid rotates inwards. The eyelashes rub on the eye and cause similar symptoms to those seen with ectropion. Like ectropion, it is usually a result of aging. The lower lid becomes loose and a muscle called the capsulopalpebral fascia disconnects from the lower eyelid. Surgery reattaches the muscle and tightens the lower lid in a manner similar to what is done for ectropion surgery.
