Upper lid blepharoplasty is a surgery that removes excess skin, muscle, and/or fat from the upper eyelid. When the excess skin, called dermatochalasis, causes vision loss superiorly, it is considered functional surgery and is covered by insurance. Patients with moderate dermatochalasis who qualify for a functional blepharoplasty can expect to have improved peripheral vision. They also often have an easier time seeing because more light is reaching the eyes, however there is no actual change to the visual acuity. Upper lid blepharoplasty is performed by surgeons in multiple specialties, however oculoplastic surgeons have the most specialized training for this procedure.
